Our Vision
Grassroots Youth Academy Trust is an educational and sporting non-profit organisation that operates in Khayelitsha. It was officially incorporated as a Trust in November 2016. Our objective is to provide mentorship, educational and sports training to local children from the ages 5 to 18. Grassroots Youth Academy was initially founded by Jongi Kamko in 2007 to provide local school children a constructive alternative to the violence and gangs of Khayelitsha. Jongi, a former professional boxer, started teaching boxing to a handful of children out of his house in Khayelitsha. Today, over ten years later, Grassroots not only teaches local children skills and discipline through boxing and cycling, but also provides extra-curricular tuition for about 150 local children and young adults in all subjects several times a week. It offers this in conjunction with volunteer tutors from the community, universities in the Western Cape and professionals.
Education
Grassroots Youth Academy Trust aims at helping learners from Khayelitsha with knowledge, skills, networks and resources. Our model draws from a pool of volunteers made up of university students and professionals.
Boxing
Jongi Kamko was a professional boxer who turned to coaching after an illness. He began coaching children in his small house in Khayelitsha in 2007 under the banner of Grassroots Boxing Academy
Cycling
Grassroots Youth Academy Trust runs a cycling programme. It offers cycling training and competition opportunities to the children who attend the Academy.
