Jongi Kanko was a professional boxer who turned to coaching after an illness. He began coaching children in his small house in Khayelitsha in 2007 under the banner of Grassroots Boxing Academy. Since then he has gone from strength to strength producing numerous provincial boxing champions, as well as national competitors. In December 2017, Grassroots produced its first national champion – Nqaba Dantile – in the under-13 age category.
