Grassroots: Building and Funding Our Project

Building Our Project

Last year, after a long battle, we managed to purchase our property on Hlala Street. Sadly the container units that were our classrooms were, by the end of the process, no longer fit for use. And so we have had plans drawn up for an entirely new community hall which will include classrooms, a gym, changing rooms and a kitchen. With several people’s help we are making this building a reality but there is always room for more funding. We are appealing to all those out there for donations of either money or building materials to make this dream a sustainable reality. Please get hold of us via the website or email Matthew Blackman at mattblack75@gmail.com if you feel you can help.

Our Project

Grassroots Youth Academy Trust is a sporting and educational non-profit organisation operating in Khayelitsha and the greater Cape Town area. We were officially incorporated as a Trust in November 2016. The trust’s objective is to provide educational opportunities, tutoring, and sporting training to local children ages 5 to 18. Grassroots was initially founded by Jongi Kanko in 2007 to provide local school children a healthy alternative to drugs and gangs. Jongi, a former professional boxer, started teaching boxing to a handful of children out of his house in Khayelitsha. Today, over ten years later, Grassroots not only teaches over 40 local children skills and discipline through boxing and cycling, but also provides extra-curricular tuition in all High School subjects several times a week to nearly 150 local youths, in conjunction with volunteer tutors from the community and from universities in the Western Cape.
